CATHOLIC SOUTHWEST
MISSION
Catholic Southwest is devoted to publishing high-quality research and
writing on the Catholic experience in Texas and the Southwest, particularly as
expressed through art, architecture, music, literature, and related spheres of
cultural study within a historical context. Recognizing the importance of the
Hispanic-Catholic contribution to the development of the region, the journal
also features articles on northern Mexico. Issues contain three to five essays,
book reviews, announcements of conferences and meetings, and notes on society
members.
HISTORY
The Texas Catholic Historical
Society, originally founded in 1926, published a series of studies on the
early history of Texas and Mexico called the Preliminary Studies of the Texas
Catholic Historical Society. The society also participated in the Texas
Knights of Columbus project Our Catholic Heritage in Texas, a seven
volume history written by Dr. Carlos Eduardo Castańeda between 1936 and 1958.
The society was inactive from the 1940s through the 1970s, when it was revived
by a group of interested clergy and scholars. Since then the society has held
regular meetings in conjunction with the Texas State Historical Association's
annual conference.
In the late 1980s the idea of promoting Catholic historical scholarship through a journal first took form among members of the Texas Catholic Historical Society, and by 1989 an editorial board headed by Patrick Foley, Ph.D., was in place. The first volume of the Journal of Texas Catholic History and Culture appeared in 1990 with the support of the Texas Catholic Conference of Bishops and the Texas Knights of Columbus.
In its first six years the Journal of Texas Catholic History and Culture, its former name, was recognized by the Catholic Press Association on four separate occasions. It published articles on all periods of Texas history, architecture, drama, and biography, along with book reviews, professional notes, and announcements; all in a style designed to be accessible both by the general public and the scholar.
Recently members of the editorial board realized that the journal should serve a broader purpose. It is the only periodical of its kind in the United States; why not expand the coverage to include our neighboring states, whose Catholic heritage shares the same roots as those of Texas? Consequently, at its 29 February 1996 meeting, the editorial board voted to rename the journal Catholic Southwest: A Journal of History and Culture.
