Effect
Realtechnik Industrial Combine constructs a ship based on the sadurtha FTL
drive at the Gagarin orbital shipyards. Additional ships are under construction.
Reasons
- FTL is the way to go. It gives humanity the key to survival.
- New technology was a central motivation for the original journey of
the Magellan.
- A simple version of the drive vastly improves insystem travel.
Status IN
ALIEN TRANSMITTER VISITED
Turn 4
Argument 3.1
Type YES, AND (+1)
Strength 3
Description
Atlas launches the Odyssey, its first FTL ship, to investigate the sadurtha
interstellar transmitter orbiting Fennen.
Effect
The transmitter's computer system holds a wealth of information about the
Fennen system. The transmitter technology is also better than equivalent
human technology. A research station is established at the transmitter.
Reasons
- Humans have always known the transmitter was there.
- The Steering Committee is interested in being able to send messages
to Earth.
- The Odyssey needs a shakedown cruise.
Status IN
WORKING TO MAKE OURSELVES BETTER
Turn 4
Argument 4
Type I DECLARE (+2)

Status IN
Turn Five
A SECOND EARTHLIKE WORLD
Turn 5
Argument 0
Type I DECLARE (+2)
Strength 2
Description
FTL probe ships find a habitable world with a relatively human-compatible
biosphere in the Tafferden system, some 20 lightyears from Fennen. There
are sadurtha artifacts in the system, but no sign of civilization past or
present on the world. Tafferden is too far from Fennen for a viable colony
to be placed onworld, but sufficient effort might make it possible.
Effect
Explorer factions and outposts outside the Fennen system have a new direction,
possibly incompatible with those promoted by the Steering Committee at Atlas.
Humanity has a new challenge available to it.
Reasons
- Earthlike worlds are relatively common. Two within 20 lightyears is
not unreasonable.
- Human probe ships have been methodically charting all nearby systems.
- Sadurtha records at the transmitter station show systems with likely
candidates for habitability.
Status IN
INTERPLANETARY TRADE
Turn 5
Argument 1

resource utilization (STRONG).
Status IN
CORPORATE GOVERNMENT ON NEWHOME
Turn 5
Argument 2
Type I DECLARE (+2)
Strength 3
Description
A coalition of corporations and economic collectives assume virtual control
over the Newhome colony's government. One of these collectives is a major
producer of aerospace components. The Isolationists who once controlled
the government are now subsumed by the corporate power structure.
Effect
The Newhome colony and its surrounding orbital outposts become the major
nexus of sophisticated manufacturing in the Fennen system, including the
primary producer of interface craft. The Atlas orital outposts become mere
gatherers of raw materials.
Reasons
- Newhome has a stable environment. It is easier to do large-scale manufacturing
onworld.
- Newhome already has a well-developed aerospace industry (STRONG).
- The Newhome orbital outposts have been developed for over 30 years
(STRONG).
Status IN
TERRAFORMING ON CHENOIR
Turn 5
Argument 2.1
Type YES, AND (+1)
Strength 4
Description
Several Newhome corporations start to dabble in terraforming. They center
their efforts on Chenoir, because this moon has already been identified
as a promising terraforming candidate.
Effect
The influence of the Newhome colony is extended out from the world proper
into the Atlas moon system.
Reasons
- Newhome is becoming wealthy on trade.
- The Newhome corporations want to expand their influence.
- The colonization of Newhome have given Newhome scientists technical
insights into terraforming.
Status IN
RISE OF THE FAMILIES
Turn 5
Argument 3
Type I DECLARE (+2)
Strength 3
Description
Many independent Explorer expeditions in the Fennen system locate a variety
of sadurtha artifacts.
Effect
Successful prospecting gives rise to a large number of personal fortunes.
This in turn gives rise to several large, semi-autonomous merchant Families
throughout the Fennen system.
Reasons
- Information from the alien transmitter provides clues to locations
of other alien caches (STRONG).
- In the Fennen system, ownership is 90% of the law.
- The genengineered humans from the Chenoir birthlabs allow more rapid
exploration (STRONG).
Status IN
THE ORBITALS UNIONIZE
Turn 5
Argument 4
Type I DECLARE (+2)
Strength 2
Description
The inhabitants and workers in the Altas moon system and on the Newhome
orbital stations form trade unions. These unions all belong to one central
confederation.
Effect
The real power in the Altas moon systems is the Union Syndicate, not the
Steering Committee.
Reasons
- Prospectors are making too much damn money.
- Corporations on Newhome own us, and we get nothing in return.
- Due to the confined nature of orbital life, a cooperative social structure
is necessary.
Status IN
NEWHOME UNION-BUSTING
Turn 5
Argument 4.1
Type YES, BUT (+0)
Strength 2
Description
Faced by the increased demands of the Union Syndicate, Newhome corporations
turn to automation to lessen labor needs on the orbital stations over Newhome.
Many of the residents of these stations are forced to either return to Newhome
or go to stations in the Atlas moon system. Few non-union personnel remain.
Effect
Union strength in the Newhome orbital stations is crushed. Population of
the Newhome orbital stations diminishes, but their industrial and trade
importance do not.
Reasons
- Corporations are tired of union harassment.
- With Newhome's recent wealth, buying automation technology from Atlas
collectives is easy.
- Corporate executives identify more with the planet than the orbital
stations.
Status IN
ALIEN BLACK MARKET
Turn 5
Argument 5
Type I DECLARE (+2)

Reasons
- The sadurtha have access to many unique recreational drugs that work
on the human biology.
- The sadurtha can provide pieces of old technology in exchange for
human slaves.
- The orbitals' Public Safety Association and other xenophobe organizations
have become corrupt.
Status IN
Turn Six
CHENOIR FINDS ANTI-AGATHICS
Turn 6
Argument 0
Type I DECLARE (+2)
Strength 2
Description
The Chenoir biolabs discover a moderately effective anti-agathic drug as
an outgrowth of their genetics experiments. The drug can extend human lifespan
to about 300 years, but is phenomenally expensive to produce. Synthesizing
it at good yield requires a microgravity facility.
Effect
The wealthy and powerful can now purchase extended life. The socialist orbital
society must deal with a good that cannot be provided to all. Because microgravity
is necessary to produce the drug, the Newhome colony is forced to negotiate
for it.
Reasons
- Chenoir has long been working on improving human genetics.
- The human genome was mapped out even before Magellan left Earth.
- Data from the Newhome biosphere provides Chenoir geneticists with
new insights.

- The FTL technology and alien technologies make this a viable venture
(STRONG).
- The Families, by combining their wealth, have the resources to pull
it off.
Status IN
CORPORATIONS CEDE ORBITAL FACTORIES
Turn 6
Argument 4
Type I DECLARE (+2)
Strength 2
Description
The Newhome corporations abandon most of their orbital manufacturing facilities.
Future projects will be handled on a contract basis with the orbitals as
independent contractors. All design work will still be done on Newhome.
Effect
Political relations with the Newhome orbital stations are improved. Newhome's
economy becomes more information-based.
Reasons
- Corporate executives are tired of going into orbit to check on their
factories.
- Corporations can raise some cash by selling facilities to Newhome
orbital associations.
- Corporations want to improve conditions in the Newhome orbitals.
Status IN
THE FAMILIES BUY FTL
Turn 6
Argument 5
Type I DECLARE (+2)
Strength 2
Description
The explorer Families combine resources to purchase a controlling interest
in Realtechnik Industrial Combine.

- Many Newhome citizens have money and leisure time, providing a local
market.
Status IN
EVERYBODY AGAINST THE UNIONS
Turn 6
Argument 8
Type I DECLARE (+2)
Strength 3
Description
The Steering Commitee, the Families and the Newhome corporations band together
to crush the decadent, corrupt Union Syndicate.
Effect
The power of the Union Syndicate is crushed. Unions are outlawed throughout
the Fennen system.
Reasons
- All the groups involved do not want to pay the Unions off.
- The Steering Committee controls the air, the water and the food the
unions need to live.
- The Unions are already weakened by their failure to organize on Newhome
(STRONG).
Status IN
Turn Seven
PLAGUE IN SPACE
Turn 7
Argument 0
Type I DECLARE (+2)
Strength 3
Description
A virulent plague devastates the Janashan IV Industrial Habitat in Newhome
orbit. Over 4500 residents die. There is no known cure to the plague. Janashan
IV had been a busy docking and transfer facility, and carriers are feared
to have spread across the system.
Effect
There is a new threat to human life in the Fennen system. Isolated orbital
stations are safe as long as their quarantine procedures are effective,
but doomed if the infection gets on board. The Newhome colony is protected
by its greater dispersion, but at risk due to the lack of effective isolation.
Reasons
- Some native Newhome life is known to be inimical to humans (STRONG).
- Many humans live in close quarters on orbital stations, facilitating
the spread of disease.
- Who knows what the sadurtha have been doing with the human genetic
information they bought?
Status IN
NEWHOME FINDS VACCINE
Turn 7
Argument 1
Type I DECLARE (+2)
Strength 3
Description
Scientists on Newhome develop a vaccine for the Janashan plague.
Effect
Newhome now has a drug to trade with Atlas in exchange for the longevity
drugs developed by Chenoir. Newhome sells the cure to anyone who can pay
the price.
Reasons
- Newhome doesn't want a plague to destroy all of humanity.
- Newhome scientists are unquestioned experts on native biology.
- Trade with the Families gives access to new compounds from the gas-giant
dredges (STRONG).
Status IN
FAMILIES DEVELOP NEW INDUSTRY
Turn 7
Argument 2
Type I DECLARE (+2)
Strength 3
Description
The Families develop a new industry selling exotic bioroids for specialized
labor or entertainment needs.
Effect
The Families increase their wealth. Unusual modified human bondservants
become commonplace throughout Fennen.
Reasons
- Chenoir has already been doing research on genetically-modified humans
(STRONG).
- The Families use bribery to get the Steering Committee to give them
access to the Chenoir facilities.
- The Families are greedy and amoral. They'll do anything for a buck.
Status IN
STEERING COMMITTEE QUARANTINE
Turn 7
Argument 3
Type I DECLARE (+2)
Strength 2
Description
The Steering Committee imposes a one-month decontamination quarantine on
all Atlas moon system stations to protect against infection by the Janashan
Plague.
Effect
Effective sterilization processes are developed and implemented. The Janashan
IV station is sterilized. The Steering Committee uses the Public Safety
Association to suppress discontent.
Reasons

- The Public Safety Association was tailor-made for this kind of emergency.
- The Steering Committee wants to show that it is in control and providing
useful direction in need.
Status IN
SECRET MISSION TO ALIENS
Turn 7
Argument 4
Type I DECLARE (+2)
Strength 2
Description
Newhome secretly sends a group of envoys to the sadurtha civilization on
the Northern continent to study them.
Effect
Humans learn more about the aliens.
Reasons
- Newhome government is suspicious that the sadurtha may have engineered
the plague.
- After studying the virus, Newhome scientists are convinced it was
engineered.
- Some black marketeers on Newhome contracted the plague, but had no
contact with Janashan IV.
Status IN
SELF-SUFFICIENT FAMILIES
Turn 7
Argument 5
Type I DECLARE (+2)
Strength 2
Description
The Families launch a covert campaign to become self-sufficient in food,
labor, resources and finished goods.
Effect
The Families start a terraforming project on one of the medium moons in
the Atlas system. A series of colonization ships are sent to Tafferden.
A coalition of Families fund and organize collective espionage and security
organizations.
Reasons
- Between the epidemics and instability in the orbitals, the Families
need to be self-sufficient.
- The Families are wealthy enough to buy or bribe any resources or information
they need.
- Tafferden should be for the Families, and can only truly belong to
them if they are self-sufficient.
Status IN
FAMILY COLONY ON TAFFERDEN
Turn 7
Argument 5.1
Type YES, AND (+1)
Strength 3
Description
The Family colony ships arrive at the habitable world in the Tafferden system
and colonize it.
Effect
The new colony is established and becomes self-sufficient at TL7 in two
