Session Summary 1/5/97

Attendance

The group was large and varied, including some newcomers. The characters included Pawnbroker (Chris), Messerbad (Mike), Yorden (Bob), Laerynthe (Tim), Mungo (Nick) and Thad (Doug).

The Newcomers

Mungo and Thad are both new to the group. Mungo is a former oorthoi body-man from Paiden. He is quite strong and stout, but not overwhelmingly bright. Along with him is Thad, a Sa Opedi human skilled in the martial arts.

The Outer Guard Towers

As the session opened, the group was in the gatehouse of the Eater's fortress. They had already destroyed the plant creature living in the old cistern, but had not yet dealt with the Amorphous Thing in the Jail, down beneath the gatehouse.

Their first action was to investigate the four remaining guard towers around the outside of the Eater's tower.

The First Tower

The entire tower was covered with a poisonous moss, and a plantlike Twisted creature was living in the second floor. After Messerbad suffered a minor stab wound from the Twisted plant-thing, he retaliated by casting a huge Wither Plant spell upon the entire tower (4-hex radius spell, covering a 6-meter radius sphere). His magic killed all the moss as well as the plant-creature. After the death of the moss, the characters set it on fire.

Before Messerbad killed off the moss, Laerynthe and Thad gathered up a supply of the moss and stored it in a clay pot found in the gatehouse.

The Second Tower

This tower was the tower the characters had found a Collector living in in their first trip to the Eater's tower. The body of the Collector, though much-decayed, remained where the characters had left it. This tower also contained some of the poisonous moss, though without any aggressive Twisted creatures to defend it, so the characters gathered several more pots of the stuff.

The Occupied Tower

The third tower proved to be home to two Twisted creatures. When the characters first investigated, they found the occupants to be absent, but the remains of their diet (a large quantity of rotting animal flesh and offal on the first level) more than plentiful. A brief search through the quarters on the second level uncovered four spears and six axes (all apparently leftovers from the Eater's men), a string of 21 challock, an an iron beetle the size of a human hand. The beetle was identified as magical, though it's purpose remains obscure. It shows the same style of workmanship as the Eyeless One brooch worn by Messerbad. The Iron Beetle is index #52.

After some time, the two occupants (one huge, misshapen Twisted creature with a massive axe; one smaller Twisting that may have once been a deyrey neuter) returned and a fight ensued. The characters suffered some damage, but managed to defeat the creatures without great trouble.

The Fourth Tower

The final intact tower held an amorphous creature quite similar to the one beneath the gatehouse, though possibly a bit smaller. The characters managed to drive it into the old cistern, where they destroyed it with fire and the poisonous moss. In the process, several characters (including Messerbad, Thad, and Mungo) suffered great damage from the thing's acids.

Time Passes

The characters spent two days in the gatehouse recovering from their wounds. During that time, Messerbad grew four pots full of moss and the other characters gathered an additional four pots from the Second Tower. All told, the characters accumulated eight pots of the stuff.

The Interlopers

On the third day, the characters ventured into the Eater's Tower proper. There, they found a group of humans and youda apparently from Paiden. These folk insisted that they were also interested in clearing out the Eater's Tower, though with an eye towards settling here. After one human in the second group noticed Messerbad's Eyeless One brooch, one of them left the room briefly and returned with a Collector named Chathash. Chathash talked with the characters for some time in his quite, rasping askalach, then noted Messerbad's brooch. He asked for it back. Messerbad returned it. In exchange, the Collector gave him the Tracking Skin, a human skin taken from a skilled woodsman. When worn, the wearer gains +4 to Tracking skill, or a Tracking skill of 15 (whichever is better). The Tracking Skin is index #53.

The Stone Man

While the rest of the characters talked to the Collector Chathash, Yorden used his flight powers to enter the top of the Tower and creep down through the Lesser Warrens. In the process, he encountered a single Stone Man reading a book.

Regrouping

The characters decided to attempt to enlist the Stone Man's aid in exterminating the Collector Chathash and his associates. They delegated Yorden to the task of talking to the Stone Man. His attempt was successful, and the Stone Man agreed to give them aid. He told them that he knows of a secret passage in the tunnel between the Gatehouse and the Basement Laboratory leading to the Lesser Warrens. Using this passage, the characters should be able to drive the amorphous thing in the basement into the Laboratory and then into the Eater's Tower proper, where it can eliminate the Collector.

Amorphous Thing Movement Rules

These guidelines should be used to determine the ease of moving the Amorphous Thing from the gatehouse jail it currently occupies to the Basement Laboratory. The Amorphous Thing initially occupies the gatehouse jail in six sectors, each containing 25 "creature units". The tunnel between the gatehouse jail and the laboratory is ten sectors long (see diagram below). No sector can contain more than 25 "creature units".

An attempt to move some quantity of "creature units" from one sector to an adjacent sector takes ten minutes. The group must designate one individual as the leader. That person must make a successful Animal Handling roll. If the Animal Handling roll is successful, each handler must attempt to move "creature units". The amount moved per person is determined according to the table below:

 Tool Creature Units Moved
One Armed Individual 1
Flaming Log 2d
Hunk of Poison Moss 3d
Flame Jet spell 1d+2 (per point)

Each handler must make some kind of skill roll (depending upon their tool) to be able to move any creature units. Appropriate skills include: DX, Poisons, Ax/Mace, or Throwing.

The characters currently possess about a dozen large beams suitable for use as creature prods, and 30 hunks of poisonous moss.

The End of the Session

The session ended with the characters preparing to push the amorphous thing into the tunnel to the Laboratory. Each character received three experience points.
