The Aether Sailors game is set in the year 1830, initially in the Departement du Nereidum in French Mars. The characters are quite a motley bunch, including a decadent French aristocrat, a world-wise English professional hunter, a Spanish duelist with impeccable style, a Russian giant, and a mechanical man. They meet in the obscure frontier town of Criqueronde, and who can tell where they will go from there!

| Character | Player | Description |
|---|---|---|
| Smith | Paul | A mechanical man, or possibly mechanical menace, built by an English inventor from a salvaged Martian clockwork brain. |
| Dmitri Baranov | Chris | A Russian born of the lower classes who has learned how to speak to his betters, how to beat them at whist, and how to chop people apart with two hatchets at a time. |
| Christophe Joseph Pepin | Tim | A French aristocrat from Normandy with a family that defies description. He finds himself on Mars hoping to learn about the human condition and score some really good drugs. |
| "Quent" Lawrence | Chuck | An Englishman who has lived on both Venus and Mars. He grew up with missionaries in the jungles of Venus, has lived with savage Martian tribesmen, and has defended his honor from an overly-lusty ship captain. Killed on 03/27/2005 by ruffians under the Dutch crimeboss Basile Giroux. |
| "Captain" Percy Winston-Smythe | Chuck | A onetime Lieutenant in the Royal Navy who found that his fondness for the cards got in the way of his prospects for advancement. He has since gone on to greater things, having become Captain of the Musaraigne d'egrappage. |
| Carlos Juan Victor Sanchez | Ernest | A Spanish duelist from Barcelona who is quick with his blade and quicker with his tongue. He says that he killed a Presbyterian once in a duel, and nobody doubts it. |
