Mermaids and Sea Sirens

This 5" long china nude
nymph in luster sea shell is being reproduced in bisque with a complexion
coat and brightly painted shell. Note the two air holes in top of shell;
these holes allowed air to escape so that she could be securely anchored
to the floor of an aquarium. She is incised underneath "24384"
and "Germany" in very tiny letters.

Incised "Germany" and "6244," this 3.25" long
mermaid is from Weiss, Kühnert, and Company. Though certainly charming,
her bisque and finishing are just adequate (note the mold debris under her
right arm and wrist), and the facial painting is simple and rather hasty.
After all, these were originally inexpensive novelties and aquarium decor!
The reproductions have superior bisque and decoration, and the headband
of roses is not painted, but is colored the same as her hair.
Also from Weiss, Kühnert,
and Company, this 5" long bisque mermaid is incised "Germany."
Again, the quality of the bisque and decoration are just average. She is
being reproduced in china (the material, not the country!).
This 2.5" mergirl
on her seahorse steed is from Hertwig and Company. She is incised "Germany"
and "4280." Note her unusual blue-green hair and eyebrows. Of
pale precolored bisque, her colors are not fired in. She is being reproduced
in bisque as a blonde on a pale tan seahorse, and the colors are fired.
Incised "Relpaw"
and "445," this cutie on her coral couch is 3.75" tall. She
has blue hair and her coral is airbrushed vivid orange. The bisque and painting
are fair. The reproduction is a blonde seated on pink coral, with finer
bisque and decoration.
